Hopewell vs Matoaca

On Friday night, the Hopewell Blue Devils played their last regular season game against the Matoaca Warriors. The Devils would be looking to finish their undefeated season at 10-0. The defense would start off great, forcing a turnover on downs and a safety on their first two drives. That safety would give the offense momentum, allowing Trey Henderson to score a rushing TD. Deantre “Bug” Mason would be the other scorer in the first half, but on the other side the defense would allow a TD on a long pass. Hopewell would go up 15-6 at halftime. Defensive players that would make an impact in the first half would be Kavieon Cox, and Alex Rockwell. A big pass to Jeremiah Hutchins set things up in the second half. This would open up a rushing TD for Robert “Nook” Briggs. After some great defensive play on both sides, Robert Briggs would score another rushing TD. Matoaca would go on to score two more TDs, and a 2-pt conversion. Hopewell would come up with the win after recovering an onside kick. They will finish their season 10-0, but don’t want to go into the playoffs with a 10-0 attitude. Coach Irby says he’d rather treat the games as any other, having a 0-0 record. The offensive line has been a unit that has been great all year. The unit is led by Seniors Ronald Webster, Phillip Bowden, and their coach, Brian Moore. These guys have led the way for multiple RBs, including one of the best in the state in Trey Henderson. Hopewell is a well put together team, and they have shown this all year. They will learn more about the playoff schedule at a later date.
