Hopewell vs Goochland

In the State Semifinals game, the Hopewell Blue Devils played against the Goochland Bulldogs. This game would be to see who goes on to play Lord Botetourt in the State Championship. Going into this game Hopewell was undefeated at 13-0, meanwhile Goochland was 12-1.

First Half

Early on in the first half, both sides would make great defensive plays. One of Hopewell’s big plays would be an interception from Trey Henderson. They unfortunately would not score on the drive that followed the turnover. The Blue Devils would get another stop after that interception, that would result in a score. Trey Henderson would run in for his first score from 11 yards out. Goochland would make some great plays on long passes, and also recovering onside kicks to follow Hopewell’s touchdown. Goochland’s ability to gain momentum after their first score, and then recover an onside kick would hurt the Blue Devil defense. The defense gave up 21 points in the first half. This would be closing in on the most points they have given up all year (25 points against IC Norcom in the regular season). They would still make big plays on the defensive side (including two interceptions from Henderson, and Hubbard), but the offense was unable to capitalize on those plays.

Second Half

Coming out of halftime, the Blue Devils looked rejuvenated making key plays on both sides of the ball. Trey Henderson made a huge run for 82 yards and a Hopewell touchdown. This play alone would help the Devils gain their momentum back. After this they would allow Goochland to score one last touchdown. Kaiveon Cox would make big plays on the next two offensive drives helping the Devils to keep their drives going. Cox was also able to find the end zone on both drives. Hopewell tied things up and were able to stop Goochland from breaking the tie. Trey Henderson was able to score another touchdown to give his team the lead. All the Blue Devils needed to do was get one last stop, and they were able to do so. This stop would give the offense the ball back with just seconds left on the clock. In these last seconds, Hopewell would take a knee giving them the win over Goochland 35-28.

Hopewell played a tough game in this one against a tough opponent. They gave up the most points that they have given up all year. Despite this fact, they were able to show perseverance and make the right plays at the right time in order to make this great come back. Hopewell will play against Lord Botetourt in the State Championship at Liberty University.
