This Saturday, Miami played Central Michigan at home. I thought that this would be a game we wouldn’t have any trouble with. That wasn’t the case. I’m going to go over things that I felt led to us struggling.
Offensive Play-Calling
Honestly, I hoped this would be a thing of the past, and be left for last year. Obviously our new Offensive Coordinator isn’t working out either. There were situational play calls I didn’t agree with; like running the ball on 3rd & 17 near the opponents 20 yard line. Usually, in that type of situation, you’d try and go for the TD by passing. Not to mention the run game wasn’t going well for us in the game. This is an error that needs to be fixed against teams like UVA.
The Special Teams
I have given the Kicker a really hard time all year so far, but it’s bad when your own coach is afraid of sending you out there. Bubba Baxa only attempted one kick this game (22 yards), and thankfully he made it. That kick puts him at 5/9 on the year. He also attempted two XPs, and made both.
The Defense
Although these guys forced 3 Turnovers, including the Al Blades Jr interception that sealed the game, they were on the field entirely too long. You never want your defense to be on the field too long, because they will get tired. When they get tired they allow the opposing offense to take advantage.
Penalties
The team as a whole committed 13 penalties. That is a ridiculous amount of penalties. Granted, I disagreed with some of them (notably the holding called on Pinckney), but regardless this needs to be addressed. This is not the only game they have had a major number of penalties.
As Coach Manny Diaz said after the game “Tonight was our second win, but probably our fourth best performance.” The Canes have a bye week coming up this week, so we really need to prepare for our next battle against the Hokies from Virginia Tech.
